3mm full-length wetsuit for tropical Malaysian diving
Pros
- Plenty warm for single dives in 28–30°C water
- Full-length coverage guards against sun, stings and reef scrapes
- Affordable, and easy to rent or buy locally
- Dries fast between dives
Cons
- You'll feel the cold by the third dive of the day, or in deeper thermoclines
- Can feel too warm on a sunny surface interval
- Cheaper suits lose their stretch and seal quickly
Verdict
For most new-to-intermediate divers doing one or two dives a day around Tioman, the Perhentians and Redang, a 3mm full suit is the sweet spot. Doing three-dive days, deeper sites, or you just feel the cold? Add a hooded vest or step up to 5mm. Four out of five — the sensible default, with one honest caveat.
